Places where Ser Piero da Vinci lived and worked

Ser Piero, Leonardo's father, practiced the profession of notary in Florence from 1448 to 1504. He always had his studio near the "Palazzo del Podestà", today's Bargello Museum. The different houses where he lived over the years were therefore constantly close to his place of work, in a restricted area between via Ghibellina and Piazza di Parte Guelfa.

  • Ser Piero practiced the profession of notary in Florence from 1448 to 1504. When he died, on July 9, 1504, Leonardo noted that he was still «notary at Palazzo del Podestà» (today's Bargello Museum), in the vicinity of which he had his studio, alone or in partnership with other notaries. When he died his place was taken by his son, Ser Giuliano Da Vinci.

  • Ser Piero had several houses in Florence: it is possible to follow the itinerary in the heart of the historical center, starting from the first house where his presence is documented, in Borgo dei Greci, to get to the last one, in via Ghibellina, where he died.

  • The Da Vinci family tomb was in the Badia Fiorentina: Ser Piero was buried here in 1504. The first burial was that of Ser Piero’s second wife in 1474; the last one of a great-grandson, in 1614. In total there were at least 21 burials. The Badia was transformed in the 17th century and the traces of the tomb were lost.
