Andrea del Castagno, Last Supper

An unusual itinerary for art lovers retraces the 15th-century paintings of the Last Supper that can be found in monasteries around the city of Florence, such as the frescoes by Andrea del Castagno (in the former Convent of Saint Apollonia), Perugino (in the former Convent of Saint Onofrio, popularly known as “di Fuligno”), Domenico Ghirlandaio (in the Church of San Marco and the Church of Ognissanti), and Andrea del Sarto (in the Church of San Salvi).
In the Last Supper which Leonardo painted for his patron, the Duke of Milan, the artist revitalized this tradition by introducing innovative compositional devices and a dynamic configuration that lends his scene the quality of a dramatic film still.
